January has taken many of us by surprise with the weather. Church events have been cancelled or rescheduled because of the snow and, at the time of writing this article, there appears to be no relief coming.
During such inclement weather it is an opportunity for many to show Christian care to neighbours. Just calling to make sure folk have adequate heating, food and other essentials can be a cause of great relief to those wondering how they were going to manage to get out in the snow.
It reminds us that “Love” is an action word! During February we will celebrate St. Valentine’s Day. Chocolates and roses will be high on many agendas but true love is much more than that!
True love is going the extra mile; calling on the neighbour to help them; visiting the sick; feeding the poor; supporting the distressed. Jesus described the ultimate true love as “laying down one’s life for another”. Most of us are not called to such extremes but too often we hear in the news of service personnel paying the ultimate price on behalf of their country.
The primary message that the Church has to offer is one of love: “God so loved the world that He gave His only Son” (John 3v16). Why? So that we might have life in all it’s fullness. And that is so much more than a box of chocs and a bunch of flowers!
