Life on the Home Front, Vintage Fashion, Wartime Vehicles and Entertainment Galore!

Visitors to The Historic Dockyard Chatham on September 17th and 18th will think they have stepped back in time as they experience ‘life on the home front’ at Salute to the ‘40s. This popular and authentic 1940’s extravaganza boasts an incredible list of events, displays and have-a-go activities. With even more entertainment than ever this year, visitors can sing, dance and be kept amused all day long with some of the best ENSA and American inspired wartime entertainment in the business.

The Dockyard’s steam locos will chug up and down; troops will be set up in their encampments and military vehicle convoys will rumble around the Dockyard; a real air raid siren will shriek its unforgettable warning followed by the fire service rushing to extinguish any fires and medical services treating any casualties. There will be sing-along sessions and dance workshops; 1940’s vehicles and opportunities to sample the finest traditional cakes and preserves in the tea rooms. New for this year is a 1940’s village square with its very own vintage butchers, fishmonger, newsagents, grocer, garage, police station, pawn brokers and hardware store which will really add to the nostalgic atmosphere. There will be plenty of opportunities for visitors to get their ‘Hands on History’, with wartime dress up and paintball.

Once a day the Dockyard will be brought to life by a spectacular ‘Air Raid Attack at the Dockyard’ re-enactment, complete with stunning audio, visual and pyrotechnic effects. The Historic Warships will once again provide the remarkable backdrop to an incredible pyrotechnic display, with the firing of the B-Gun aboard HMS CAVALIER for the first time since the ship’s de-commission.

Visitors are encouraged to go to the event dressed in ‘40s clothes but for those who don’t, there is the fantastic opportunity to acquire a fabulous ’40s hairstyle and wardrobe amongst the wonderful array of stalls and stands in the trading village. Salute to the ’40s has joined the ranks of the best 1940s events in the country, aided by its authentic historical setting and enthusiastic re-enactors and performers of the period.
