A book launch and poetry event takes place in Gillingham Library later this month.

Author Maria McCarthy will read from her new poetry collection Strange Fruits,plus there will be other readings of prose and poetry by local writers Tony Anderson, Helen Aveling, Sarah Jenkin, Jane Smith and Vicky Wilson.

Maria wrote Strange Fruits in memory of a friend who died from cancer. The book will be available to buy and all proceeds will go towards Macmillan Cancer Support.

There will also be a special guest appearance by the community choir Swale Sings sharing songs from Southern Africa, Kent and around the world.

The readings will take place from 2pm on Saturday, 24 September in Gillingham Library
