Please find below an open letter from Cllr Les Wicks, Portfolio Holder for Children’s Services, and Rose Collinson, the Director of Children and Adults, about the Medway Test held on Saturday, 24 September.

We realise the Medway Test can be a difficult time for parents and children and the last thing we would want is for them to experience any additional anxiety.

This year the test was conducted successfully in eight out of our ten centres. However, we recognise and fully acknowledge that things did not go to plan at two centres – Rainham School for Girls and Chatham Grammar School For Boys.

We are looking at what happened and we can assure parents we will do this extremely thoroughly in order to avoid any similar issues in the future.

If parents feel their child has not performed to their full potential in the Medway Test, for whatever reason, they can ask for their child’s school work to be reviewed by an independent panel of headteachers from primary and secondary grammar schools in Medway.

This panel will look at a selection of the child’s class work provided by their primary school from years 5 and 6 as well as their Medway Test result to assess whether a grammar school is the best option for that child.

This year, the review panel will also be told what happened in each test centre so that they are fully aware of any events that may have affected a child’s performance. Parents can also include any information they want the panel to be aware of on their review request form.

The results of the test and details of the review panels has been posted to parents on Friday 7 October, and applications for independent reviews must be submitted by 4pm Friday, 14 October. The review panel decisions will be sent to parents by 26 October.

There is also a separate appeal process – that all parents can use whether they have asked for a review or not – which will take place after secondary school places have been allocated next year.

We would like to offer a sincere and full apology to all children and parents for the problems with the Medway Test this year at the two affected centres.

Yours truly,
Cllr Les Wicks – Portfolio Holder for Children’s Services, Medway Council
Rose Collinson – Director of Children and Adults, Medway Council
