Two ex apprentices turned entrepreneurs are the latest business owners to take a Medway apprentice under their wing as part of the 100 in 100 apprenticeship campaign.

Daniel Mills and Daniel Everard set up their own business, D2 Electrical Ltd, in September 2009, three years after gaining their own City and Guilds electrical apprenticeships through JTL Training.

The pair, both from Medway, are no strangers to learning the ropes as an apprentice themselves, and as business picks up they’ve decided to give an aspiring electrician the same opportunity.

“We decided to take on an apprentice to expand our growing business” said Daniel Mills, 26.

“Having an apprentice can massively help out an electrician while out on site. Jobs can be completed quicker and two sets of hands are always helpful. We also felt we should give an opportunity to a young lad who is keen to get into a very competitive industry.”

The business recruited 16 year old George Tilbury as their apprentice last month and he has already been put to work.

“Since starting with us George has carried out many jobs under the supervision of an electrician. He’s obviously been making the teas, but he’s also swept up, clipped cables, pulled in heavy armoured cables and generally helped us out. As a company that carries out a wide variety of work, George will benefit and gain a lot of experience.”

George, from High Street, Halling, will attend Mid Kent College once a week to train and will spend the rest of his time on site working with the electricians.

“I’ve always wanted to learn a trade and doing an apprenticeship seemed like the best way to get started because it’s so hands on and you get straight to work” he said.

“I’m enjoying getting out and about with the team, meeting people and learning new skills and hope I’ll be able to stay with the company for some time once I’m qualified.”

D2 Electrical Ltd, based on Lingley Drive, Wainscott, carry out various electrical works including domestic, commercial, industrial, 24/7 emergency call outs and planned maintenance works.

They are approved by the Medway Fair Trader scheme and recently completed work at the new Krystals nightclub and Vanity Bar in Chatham.

Medway Council’s Portfolio Holder for Strategic Development and Economic Growth, Cllr Jane Chitty, said: “It’s great to see two former apprentices who have worked hard and are succeeding in business giving something back by taking on a young person, who’s looking to follow in their footsteps.

“It’s also a great testimony to the fact that apprenticeships work, by giving young people with drive and ambition the chance to develop their skills and providing businesses with new talent geared to help them expand.”

The council run 100 in 100 Apprenticeship Challenge launched in May to attract local businesses to take on – as the name suggests – 100 apprentices in 100 days. The challenge is due to come to an end this month and has to date beaten targets with more than 140 pledges.
