Upnor Castle from the Medway

Visitors to Upnor Castle will get to relive the Dutch raid as part of an exciting re-enactment event on Saturday 23 and Sunday, 24 June.
The Dutch are Coming! is a family friendly event depicting the brave but ineffective battle in 1667 when the Dutch sailed up the river to attack the British fleet at anchor.
Visitors will be able to hear the stories and learn the tactics that led to the raid succeeding, resulting in the capture of the HMS Royal Charles and other ships based at the Chatham Dockyard being burnt.
Living history activities and demonstrations will take place throughout the weekend, including cooking, drill display, bullet making, weaving and children’s drill fun.
Visitors can also learn the full history of the castle with a whole new range of displays and activities at the castle – from trying on uniform to drawing a three-masted ship of the fleet, or even firing a ping-pong canon at the invading Dutch ships.
An audio-visual experience describing the dramatic event is also available at the castle throughout the season.
Admission to the castle is £5.65 for adults, £3.60 for children, £15 for a family ticket (two adults and up to three children). Tickets for English Heritage Members are half price. The event runs from 10am to 4pm on each day, and the last admission time in to the castle is 5.15pm.
Upnor Castle is situated at the end of the High Street in Upper Upnor. For more information call 01634 718742
