Medway is gearing up for a day dedicated to showcasing the area’s economic prowess and employment opportunities.

Businesses and industry leaders from across the south east and London will descend on the Construction Expo in Medway, on Thursday, 11 October, for a day dedicated to boosting employment and regeneration in the area.

One of the country’s largest construction events, the Construction Expo will form part of a larger Employment and Skills Day across the area.

From leading architects and building contractors to small local businesses and people looking for a future career in construction, the expo is aimed at attracting potential developers and offering advice on how to kick-start a career in construction.

Sponsored by Medway Council, the event will run from 8.30am to 3pm at slip 5 of the Historic Dockyard, Chatham and will include 12 free workshops and speakers such as interior designer and TV presenter, Oliver Heath.

A jobs and apprenticeships fair with local employers and training providers will also be held all day (from 10am to 3pm) at The Brook Theatre, Chatham, offering details on the latest vacancies and courses with the retail, hospitality and security sectors as its focus.

The fair will be attended by MP for Gillingham and Rainham Rehman Chishti, along with PPS to the Minister of State for Employment, Department for Work and Pensions, Harriett Baldwin MP, Cllr Jane Chitty, Medway Council’s Portfolio Holder for Strategic Development and Economic Growth and the Leader of Medway Council, Cllr Rodney Chambers.

At the fair, Medway Council’s Portfolio Holder for Strategic Development and Economic Growth, Cllr Jane Chitty, will also launch a vital new EU project, IMPRESS, at 11am. Over the next three years, IMPRESS will work alongside employers to invest £1 million in helping people find work and stay in employment.

One of Medway’s major regeneration projects, the development at Rochester Riverside will also take the spotlight on the day, with an evening dedicated to celebrating the successes of the 12 construction apprentices that have been taken on there, as part of the initial social housing development programme.

The multi million pound development will create at least 73 affordable homes and through funding secured from the SUCCES project, part funded by the EU ERDF Interreg IV Two Seas programme and the council, it’s creating apprenticeship and training opportunities for local people.

Member of Parliament for Gillingham and Rainham, Rehman Chishti MP said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for all those seeking jobs to meet local employers and training providers and learn what is available in Medway.

“I would encourage everyone who is looking for employment or support to come along and see how we can help them to realise their aspirations.”

Cllr Jane Chitty, said: “Medway’s economy is continuing to strengthen and unemployment is falling steadily. It is therefore fitting that such an event is being held here because it shows our continued commitment to getting more people in work and overcoming the recession.

“Our economy is doing so well that we are receiving national and European recognition. It makes sense that we should build on this.”
