Medway Council will soon be able to offer residents weekly recycling collections, thanks to a successful bid for government funding.

The council has been given funding of just over £14million, following a successful bid for funding from the Weekly Collection Support Scheme.

The council has always had weekly household waste collections for black sack rubbish. The increased service, offering weekly collections of recycling and organic waste as well as general waste, will come into effect in summer 2013. Weekly household waste collections will continue as usual.

Medway Council’s Portfolio Holder for Front Line Services Cllr Phil Filmer said: We’re really pleased to have received this award which will make recycling even more convenient for our residents and also encourage more recycling. This will reduce the council’s burden of disposal costs as well as associated carbon emissions. So as well as being better for the environment it will allow more money to be spent on other council services”.

More information will be provided in the coming weeks.
