Brompton Westbrook Primary School in Gillingham has been rated as outstanding for leadership and management by Ofsted inspectors.

The overall rating for the school is now good, following a previous Ofsted rating of satisfactory at its last inspection in December 2010.

Inspectors visited the school, which has 335 pupils, on 13 and 14 November and observed teaching in lessons and looking at a range of school documents and children’s work.

Inspectors found that Headteacher Jane Heyes provides inspirational leadership and that leaders at all levels have provided very strong support to help make the school make rapid progress in the past three years.

The report notes that, since the previous inspection, the quality of teaching has been markedly improved, helping pupils of all abilities to make progress and reach higher standards. Leaders provide very effective guidance for teachers so that teaching has continued to improve.

The report found that above average attendance reflects pupils’ enjoyment of school, and that very warm relationships underpin pupils’ willingness to learn, participate in discussions and work with partners in most lessons.

The pupils are described as polite, courteous and respectful of their teachers. Inspectors also commented that parents and carers are very supportive of the school, and are especially appreciative of the high level of care the school provides for their children.

Children in the Early Years Foundation stage are also making rapid progress, providing them with an outstanding start to their education.

Headteacher Jane Heyes said: “Every member of the school staff, governors, parents and children has worked hard for this success of which we are very proud”.
Medway Council’s Portfolio Holder for Children’s Services, Cllr Les Wicks, said: “Many congratulations to everyone at Brompton Westbrook on this report, and particularly to Jane Heyes, who is extremely well regarded by parents and staff. She has deservedly been recognised for her excellent leadership and ability to lead by example”.
