Celebrations to mark the Chinese New Year will be held across two weekends, as Medway welcomes in the Year of the Snake.
There will be a preview event on Saturday, 9 February, with colourful entertainment in the High Street (near Argos) and the Pentagon Shopping Centre from 11.30am to 2.30pm, featuring The Lion Team from Foshan, The Dance Alley Dancers, The ShiKon Martial Arts Team, Cantonese Opera Performers from Hong Kong, a guest performer from China and The God of Fortune. There will also be a small street market, children’s ride and food stalls in the High Street area.
The celebrations continue on Sunday, 17 February with the Medway Chinese New Year Parade, one of the largest in the UK.
Led by the Mayor of Medway, Cllr Vaughan Hewett, the parade will form up at the junction of Chatham High Street and Military Road, at 12noon and then travel to the Tesco end of the High Street where photo opportunities will be available. The parade will include Chinese dragons, lion and unicorn dancers, and more than 150 people in Chinese costume.
To round of this year’s event, The Wonderful China show – a spectacular showcase of dancing, martial arts, music and magic at The Central Theatre in Chatham. The production starts at 2.30pm and will feature The Medway Dragon Team, The Foshan and Medway Lion Dance Teams, The Dance Alley Dancers, Shi Kon Martial Arts and special guests from the Cantonese Opera from Hong Kong.
