People all over Medway will soon have the opportunity to learn how to communicate without words. In the coming weeks a selection of courses, some free, will be on offer to teach sign language and Makaton. The communication courses held by Medway Community Learning will be running throughout March and April.

British sign language – beginners

This is a 10-week course starting on Monday, 4 March costing £86 or £62 for concessions. Sessions will take place in centres based in Rochester and Gillingham. Classes at Rochester Community Hub will run from 10am – 12pm and those at Gillingham from 7pm – 9pm.

Free taster sessions

Those wanting to experience Signalong or Makaton before they commit to a course, can do so for free at Rochester Community Hub. A free Signalong class will be held on Thursday, 14 March from 9.30am – 12.30pm. The Makaton taster session will be on Thursday, 21 March from 4pm – 7pm. Those who enjoy the taster sessions may wish to embark on longer courses. A 10-week Signalong foundation course begins on Wednesday, 17 April at the Rochester Centre. Each class will run from 7pm – 8.30pm. The two-and-a-half month course costs £85. Concessions available. An eight session Makaton beginners course begins on Thursday, 18 April also at the Rochester Centre. Running from 7pm – 9pm each week, the two-month course costs £100. Concessions available.
