A children’s centre in Medway has been given an overall outstanding rating after its first Ofsted inspection.

Inspectors visited Brompton Westbrook children’s centre, one of Medway’s 19 Surestart facilities, on 13 and 14 February.

Their report found that highly ambitious leadership and management have inspired the centre to make a significant impact on the lives of families within its reach area. Centre staff, members of the advisory board and the governing body are all fully committed to continuous improvement.

Staff have a precise understanding of the diverse local community and the needs and challenges faced, and close partnership working with midwives and health professionals ensures early knowledge of families and an understanding of their needs.

Inspectors also rated the centre’s leadership and management as outstanding, and that the passion, skill and commitment of the manager inspires staff and families alike. The centre promotes training and family learning, and has devised its own volunteering programme ensuring participants gain skills for work.

Centre Leader Jane Heyes said: “We’re delighted that the centre has been judged outstanding. We are proud to have a team of committed and flexible staff who know the community really well, as well as dedicated governors and volunteers who also work very hard to make a real difference to family life”.
