P1000652Two super-slimming couples from Hoo St Werburgh have discovered a new zest for life after winning a weight loss competition.

Carol and Tom Shave and Jill and Malcolm Smith’s success has transformed their lives and seen them crowned Hoo St Werburgh Slimming World Couples of the Year 2013.

The couples, decided to join the Hoo St Werburgh Slimming World group after realising that their weight was putting their health at risk.
They say, “We didn’t suddenly wake up with a weight problem, like most people our weight crept up gradually. I think it’s easy for couples to become comfortable with one another, and meals out and nights in with a takeaway or a bottle of wine take the toll on the waistline over time. But we realised that our size had reached a point where it was making us unhappy and we knew it would affect our health.”

P1000668Being overweight increases the risk of developing a long list of health problems including diabetes, heart disease, stroke and cancer. Around one in four people in the UK are so overweight their health is seriously at risk.*

But Carol, Tom, Jill and Malcolm are no longer part of that statistic after joining Slimming World and losing weight following Slimming World’s Food Optimising healthy eating plan and swapping high calorie, fatty, sugary foods for healthy, home-cooked meals. The plan encourages slimmers to satisfy their appetite with ‘Free Foods’, foods that are filling but low in calories and fat, like fruit and veg, pasta, rice, potatoes, lean meat, fish and eggs – so it’s possible to lose weight without ever feeling hungry or having to count a single calorie.

They say, “It’s amazing how much we’ve changed in such a short space of time and it hasn’t been hard work – we still enjoy all of our favourite meals like roast dinners, curries and stir fries, we just cook them differently now. It’s never felt like being ‘on a diet’ – and we’re confident that we’ve made the change for life now, there’s no going back to the way we were.”

The couple’s say, “At first we were nervous about joining a slimming club but there was nothing to be scared about, everyone was so friendly and supportive from day one and now we look forward to going every week. We think what really worked for us was losing weight together because it meant we spurred each other on and, with the support of the group too, we stayed motivated. And we suppose there’s been a little bit of healthy competition too!”

Having lost weight and become more physically confident, the couples are much more active and enjoy taking long walks together. Ash O’Neill who runs the Hoo St Werburgh Slimming World group, says, “Carol, Tom, Jill and Malcolm have got so much more energy and look years younger too.

She adds, “They’re real proof that slimmers are more successful when they lose weight with a friend or loved one because they can make changes together, which is often easier. Men often think that slimming clubs and healthy eating are just for women but once they come along they soon feel at home and realise that the plan is great for men too because they can eat to satisfy even the biggest appetite and still enjoy the foods they love. It’s been great having these two lovely couples in my group they’re a real inspiration to the rest of the members.”

Ash and her members are looking forward to celebrating the Hoo St Werburgh Slimming World group’s first anniversary at the end of April. She says, “The group has helped change the lives of so many people on the peninsula over the last year with a combined weight loss in excess of 300 stone!
