This year’s Medway River Festival will be awash with exciting displays and activities for all the family.

The free event takes place this Saturday, 6 July and celebrates Medway’s maritime heritage, with sailing vessels of every kind joining together for river displays and races. On land there will be exhibitions and talks, food stalls, live music and nautical themed performances throughout the day.

Among the groups taking part this year will be Medway Yacht Club, Medway Towns Rowing Club, Flying Fish Hovercraft, The Royal Yachting Association, RNLI River Rescue along with a Fire Tug Display and a Sea King Helicopter.

The crew of the sailing vessel Iceni will also be on hand to talk about their forthcoming voyage around Britain to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support, and the skies above the river will be buzzing as pilots from Rochester Airport take part in a fly by to support the event.

Medway Council’s Portfolio Holder for Community Services Cllr Howard Doe said: “This special family day is a wonderful way to celebrate Medway’s maritime history as well as a chance to see some exciting races and displays on the river. I hope everyone can come along and join in with the huge array of activities that will be on offer all day”. The Medway River Festival runs from 10am to 4.30pm. The event is free to enter and is organised by Medway Council with support from Chatham Maritime Trust.
