A top team of education experts will run Chatham Grammar School for Boys after Ofsted today (Tuesday September 10) announced the academy has been put into special measures – despite 95 per cent of pupils gaining five or more A* to C grade at GCSEs this year, including English and Mathematics.

Denise Shepherd, the Executive Principal of The Rochester Grammar School Trust, has become interim Executive Principal of Chatham Grammar School for Boys. Stuart Gardner, the Principal at The Rochester Grammar School, becomes interim Principal.

The Rochester Grammar School, is one of the highest achieving in the country, and was ranked second nationally for GCSE results in 2012. The Rochester Grammar School is also a National Support School and a National Teaching School with a successful track record of supporting other secondary schools both in Medway and in other local authorities.

In addition, teachers and leaders at Chatham Grammar School for Boys will be assisted in bringing about further improvement by other staff from The Rochester Grammar. Denise Shepherd said: “Chatham Grammar School for Boys has good results with 95 per cent of pupils achieving 5 or more A*-C GCSEs including English and Mathematics this summer. The Ofsted inspectors challenged the rate of improvement at the school, not the improvements themselves.

“The new interim Principal and I will be working with all leaders and teachers across the academy to bring about the necessary change. As part of that we will be regularly monitoring lessons and teacher involvement across the curriculum.” Stuart Gardner added: “This is an excellent school community and I am looking forward to helping build both its reputation and academic standards. Some of my colleagues from Rochester Grammar School will be providing help and support to staff at the academy where it is needed. They have a national reputation for excellence in training and the support of staff.”

A letter was sent to parents when the new appointments were made and a further letter has gone to parents explaining the plans for the future. Parents have been invited to contact the academy if they have questions and a number have had appointments with the new interim Principal. A Parents’ Forum is also being held on Thursday.

Information about the changes has been published on the academy’s website. The full Ofsted report can be viewed at http://www.ofsted.gov.uk/inspection-reports/find-inspection-report/provider/ELS/136594
