Patients and carers from Medway and Swale took the opportunity to receive one-to-one welfare benefits advice and support at an information event at the Wisdom Hospice, Rochester on Thursday 10 October 2013.

The event was held in support of Hospice Care Week 7-13 October 2013, a national week to raise awareness of the range of support available to people with life-limiting conditions and their families.

The Wisdom Hospice and palliative care teams, run by Medway Community Healthcare, support more than 750 people across Medway and Swale at home, on the hospice ward and day hospice every year.

The event was also supported by local organisations who offered specialist advice including Motor Neurone Disease Association, MHS Homes, Age UK, Medway Carers and Carers Support, Medway Credit Union and CAP (Christians Against Poverty).

Sandra Cayzer, welfare advisor at the Wisdom Hospice run by Medway Community Healthcare, explained: “Many of our patients and their families experience financial hardship as a direct result of their illness and many of them leave their full time jobs.

“The event was a chance for patients, families and their carers to take advantage of the wide range of advice and support available at the hospice and in the community.”
