An urgent meeting has today (Wednesday, 18 January 2012) been called for with Justine Greening, the Secretary of State for the Department of Transport, and representatives of Medway Council following news that the government may consult on building a Thames estuary airport in March.

An open letter has been sent, which calls on the minister to meet with the four group leaders of Medway Council as a matter of urgency so that they can put forward representations against the airport scheme.

The results of the 5 May, 2011 local elections in Medway are now available. Residents have cast their votes and returned a Conservative majority.

The results are: Conservative 35, Labour 15, Liberal Democrat 3, Independent 2.

The council is made up of 55 councillors who represent 22 wards throughout Medway.

The result of the referendum on the Alternative Vote will be announced on Friday evening. The turn out figure for the referendum in Medway was 39.76 per cent
