Gravesend shoppers will be treated to the charming spectacle of a penny farthing in motion, ridden by the very dapper Mr Phoebus – dressed head to toe in Victorian finery at ‘Music & Motors – Festival of Transport’ in the town centre on Saturday 15 June.
With a bunch of balloons in hand and coattails trailing merry cheer, Mr Phoebus will delight you with the folly of bell-ringing and horn-hooting as he cycles by in elegant form on the saddle of a modern penny farthing bicycle, pedalling old-fashioned Victorian whimsy. More
Visitors to Upnor Castle can relive the infamous Dutch Raid thanks to an exciting living history event on Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 June.
The Dutch are Coming! is a family-friendly spectacle depicting the events of the 1667 battle, when the Dutch sailed up the River Medway to attack the British fleet at anchor.
Costumed actors will bring the story to life, regaling tales of the events and tactics that allowed the Dutch to successfully capture HMS Royal Charles and to destroy other ships based at Chatham Dockyard. More
A new exhibition opened at Medway Archives and Local Studies Centre on Thursday, 6 June.
Gillingham and beyond is a free exhibition looking a Gillingham High Street, Brompton, Gads Hill and Rainham in the 1960s. The photographs are taken from the Gillingham Borough Engineers Department, many of the areas shown were demolished during the 1960s. Take a trip down memory lane and revisit the shops in Gillingham 1960s style.

Kent Wildlife Trust has launched its 6th annual Wildlife Photography Competition to encourage local residents to venture out this spring and summer to capture images of the natural assets of the ‘Garden of England’.
The four broad categories cover Fauna (mammals, insects, birds etc.), Flora (plants, trees, lichens, fungi etc.), Landscape, Coastline & People and Junior (aged 17 and under). Photographs can be taken at nature reserves, parks, schools, gardens, seaside etc., but must be in Kent. More

Budding young people in Medway are being urged to step up to national road safety challenge. A national photography competition, called Footprints, run by Road Safety GB launches today (4 March) and encourages young people aged 11-18 years to snap away on the theme of pedestrian safety. The competition will run until Sunday, 21 April. More
Leaf-peeping, the pastime of enjoying autumn foliage brings in one billion dollars each year to New England. Whilst the US state may lead the way in this tourism trade, Forestry Commission England has many worthy competitors, including the National Pinetum at Bedgebury, where the world’s best conifer collection provides an ideal green backdrop for the many splashes of vivid autumn colour. This month (July) Medway Libraries is encouraging visitors to be creative, and meet new people in the process.
Strood Library is hosting a social event on Saturday, 14 July for those people who are interested in writing, painting, photography and acting.
The idea is to encourage people from all age groups and walks of life to meet and mingle. Open to all artists from beginners to professionals.
