TAXNearly one in four council housing tenants affected by the bedroom tax in areas across the South East have fallen behind on their rent since its introduction earlier this year, according to new figures released today (Thursday) by False Economy.

Figures provided by 19 local authorities across the South East in response to Freedom of Information (FOI) requests by False Economy show that since the bedroom tax was introduced this April, more than 2,000 council housing tenants – 23 per cent of all tenants affected by the tax in these areas – have been pushed into arrears. Long-term youth unemployment in the South East is up by over a fifth (22 per cent) since the government came to power in May 2010, according to TUC analysis. The South East now has over 8,300 extra 16-24 year-olds out of work for six months or longer. The TUC research also shows that as long-term unemployment has rocketed government support for unemployed young people has fallen by 26 per cent following the replacement of the previous government’s Youth Guarantee (which included the Future Jobs Fund) with the new Youth Contract.
